Fun at The Beach

Today the kids and I took off the to beach. It was one of those rare summer days (you know ones with actually sun, that we aren't getting too many of this year) and we wanted to enjoy it. We were not alone. No, I would never take 3 children to the beach by myself, that would be crazy and possibly dangerous. We went with my mom and her friends from school (aka the Fab Five). We had a really good time. Emma, I gather, must have been a fish in a past life because she would not get out of the water. Kyle loves the water but since he has, more then likely, no body fat, he was shaking and shivering almost whole time. We did the usual beach things. Ate lunch, swam, and made things in the sand. B also decided to choke a bit on some snacks and as a result I injured my big toe on my left foot. The other nursing students actually heard my toe crack. Yeah, it hurts. Then the dark looming clouds and a text message from a cop (stating a storm was on the way) ended our time at the beach. If I wouldn't have had to fight with Emma to get her out and dried off and if I wouldn't had broken my toe the day would have been just about perfect.

Emma the Fish.

Kyle lovin' the sand.

Love this little face!

The Winner Is

The Winner of my 100th post giveaway is Angie!!

It was an easy drawing since only 2 people signed up. I put their names on two separate pieces of paper and had Emma draw one out of the hat. Sorry MOM!! But you have the back up prize of going with me and the kids to the beach today!! So there it is. Now I must pack lunches and gather towels and sun screen for the beach!! I have some stories to share so maybe later today if the sun doesn't bake me into a state of inability.

The Master of Scouts No More

I know I haven't mentioned it, so I guess I will tell you now. The Scout Master is no longer the Scout Master. He was released from his calling about three weeks ago. He was sad and relieved at the same time. He felt badly about not doing as wonderful a job as he would have liked to have done. However, they had nothing before so I think he did wonderfully. Especially when you take into consideration that he was working an extra night job and also job hunting for most of the time he was the Scout Master. With his new job he is unable to be there on Wednesday nights so they asked him instead to be the Scout Committee Chairman. So he is not totally without Scouting responsibility. He also has Fridays off and will be able to go with the Scouts on their over night camp outs. All the fun and none of the planning responsibility, just what he has always wanted!!

Now the only question that remains is what on earth am I going to call him on my blog now? Any suggestions?

World War II

June 20th 2009

History is our thing, apparently. Today we went to the airport in Benton Harbor, Michigan to attend the World War II battle reenactments there. As we arrived we walked through the allied and axis camps on our way to the shuttle. Oh, the terrible shuttle service. It made us late for the beach landing of Normandy though we had arrived an hour early. When we finally arrived at the beach the battle was already ensuing. We were unable to gain a close encounter so we opted for a view from atop a near by dune. As the Scout Master and I watched our three young offspring preferred to dig in the sand. After the battle was over we walked down near the shore and took off our shoes to get our toes wet. The water was freezing as it waved to shore and shocked our feet. The kids loved every minute of it. After the battle field was combed and rid of the shells of the blanks we were allowed a close up view of the equipment and the soldiers. Emma and Kyle were given a bullet shell each. They got their picture taken with a British solider complete with a cigar and were allowed to enter into one of the amphibious vehicles. The Scout Master was amused by the instructions painted on the side of each floating tank. They read "Install drain plugs in the hull bottom before attempting to float." One owner told us some people need to be told everything. After our adventures at the beach we returned to the airport after some shuttle mix up. There we had some pizza, walked among some airplanes, toured the inside of one airplane, and watched and looked and pointed to all our satisfaction. My favorite part of the whole day was watching the Scout Master climb the wall and also when the largest airplane flew so close that you could actually see the paratroopers jump out. Since pictures are worth a thousand words.....here are some of our day.

Kyle meets Abraham Lincoln

June 13th 2009

Today was the opening of "Abraham Lincoln, the Man You Didn't Know" at the Center for History. Kyle, as our family knows but you probably don't, is obsessed with the Civil War. Every time we go to the library he must have a book about the Civil War. So we knew we had to go to this.

They had a man portraying Abraham Lincoln and he looked dead on for the real guy. Kyle sees him and his eyes pop out. Kyle takes a few steps forward and "Abraham Lincoln" reaches down to shake Kyle's hand when Kyle blurts out "I thought you where shot!" To which the actor says I was and then bends down and whispers a secret in his ear. To which Kyle replies "Okay, it's our secret." It was very cute. They news paper lady thought so too and thus emerged the beginning of her article. Which I will have to scan in and post another time since the newspaper won't let me link to it. But here is a good picture of Kyle and Honest Abe.

We listened to this man give Lincoln's speeches. He was so good at giving them that, for a time, I was transported back in time and without really realizing it, was standing in a heavy drizzle of rain.

He was always accompanied by a guard of military men. They were his body guards. It was very interesting indeed. Inside the museum they had a replica of his casket and many other cool and artifacts and entertaining facts about Lincoln's roll in history. Because the children accompanied us this day we were unable to read and look as much as we adults would have liked so we will be going back sometime in the near future.

In attendance this day were Myself, the Scout Master, E, K, B, Grandma, Pappy, and Great Grandma Powers.

Memorial Day

May 25th 2009

Since I still haven't learned how to back date my posts and I don't want my memories lost I am just going to post them as I go. This is against my "I want this to be perfect" disorder but here it goes anyway.

Memorial Day 2009

This morning we went to a pancake breakfast at our Church. We ate talked and celebrated those who have served our country. We sang the songs of the different branches of the military and laughed so hard at how the lyrics for the Navy song are the only ones that involve drinking alcoholic beverages. We high tailed it out of there just in time to make it to the parade. We didn't even miss the first police car even though we had to walk 4 blocks from our parking space to our parade viewing corner. The funny thing is that we met my family there without even needing to coordinate ourselves. Just goes to show how we are all creatures of habit. Here are some pictures of us and our parade going experience. It was cold and windy.....just to let you know. We did not dress ourselves or the kids warm enough. Good thing we had a couple of blankets and jackets just taking up room in the van.

Emma looks a little grumpy.

Kyle and his smile.

B and her piggy tails.

The Scout Master and B.

Aunt Audrey and Me.

B waving at the parade. It took forever to get her to wave.

After the parade we trotted to the store to get some drinks, ice and general "cook out" goodies. This is because we hosted the Memorial Day Cook Out at our house. It was lots of fun. This was the first time that many of our family members had been to our home. It wasn't perfectly clean and when they wanted a tour I panicked big time. Because I had just cleaned the girls room the day before and had (as always) found about 5 loads of laundry in there. So I was going to leave my room off the tour but people peeked in anyway. And the basement was a mess from all the toys and also from the fact that we haven't unpacked all our goodies down there. Oh, well, it's life and I am lazy about unpacking stuff and sometimes about doing laundry too.

We had a little miss hap with the grill. We lost the propane tank in the move and didn't realize it until just then. Audrey and J saved the day by running out and grabbing us one. Which is a good thing because Audrey was really really hungry and being fairly vocal about it. The Scout Master did have a fire going and we thought about just cooking over that but we didn't have enough cooking sticks. Anyway, after that things went pretty smoothly.

Grandma and B

My Grandfather and My Aunt Laura.

My dad and his mother.

Becky, Stephon, & my Grandmother.

Aunt Dot (Stephon's mom and my grandma's sister) was there too along with Audrey and Jason. I'm not sure why I don't have more pictures but these were all I had. The food was good and the company was great. I believe a good time was had by all!

100th Post Giveaway & Perfectionism

This is my 100th post. I know that I could have been farther along but my life gets in the way of my blog sometimes! I have decided to do a giveaway for my 100th post. So here it is:

I made this purse from some lovely towels that my mother-in-law had given me for my birthday. I believe that this is actually one of my first posts. I have never used it and like it too well to just let it sit around here anymore. It has four outside pockets and 4 inside pockets. If you would like a chance to win this lovely summer fun purse then just leave me a comment here by Sunday the 28th and I will announce the winner on Monday morning. It isn't perfect but it is nice.

So a note on Perfectionism. I am having a really hard time with it lately. If I think that I can't get it done perfectly I won't even start. There are posts I want to post but don't because they are rambling around in my head waiting for the perfect words to capture my experience. Or projects that I want to do but never even begin because I don't think that I have the time to do it just the right way. I know I am not the only one out there with this problem. But I still allow it to hinder me at times.

So here is to letting some of the perfectionism go and actually getting some things done!!

Grandpa's Brithday

(Yes, I know it has been a long while since my last blog, I'll explain later).

Today is my grandfather's 78th birthday. So I had him over for dinner. The menu was my special meatloaf, green beans, and cake (German chocolate). Yum!! My grandparents arrived promptly at 6pm and we met with the aroma of good comfort food. We chatted and ate to our hearts content. It is always a pleasure to have them over. After our cake Grandpa was whisked downstairs to the basement for some movie time with the children whilst Grandma and I cleared the table and loaded the dishes, as well as had some good chit chat. Here are some pictures of the night's events.

We sang Happy Birthday!

He blew out the candles.

B enjoys her cake.

I love this man!!

Don't you just love my big fat cheesy grin?

I have some other stories for you to enjoy. I have just been lacking of my story telling mojo lately. I do have a very interesting tale to tell you involving a tiny pair of pink crocs, that I am sure you will enjoy. But first I believe my next post will be my 100th post.....so I was thinking a giveaway would be in order! Probably not tomorrow since we have an ultrasound to go to but soon!

Edit: The ultra sound was for Emma's kidney and bladder......not my belly!!
